Here at NALA, we work hard every day developing chlorine tolerant membranes for reverse osmosis systems. We are initially developing membranes for RO systems used in industrial and municipal water purification. The current polyamide thin film composite (PA-TFC) membranes that these systems use today are damaged by chlorinated disinfectants and are highly susceptible to biofouling. Mitigation of biofouling is the leading cause of high operating costs making the maintenance for these membranes very expensive. The cost of the chemicals and labor to maintain these membranes can represent 50% of the annual operating costs for the systems. The risk of inadequate performance or irreparable membrane
damage is significant. NALA membranes will eliminate biofouling and the
operating costs associated with biofouling. Our new and innovative membranes
will function as a drop-in replacement to current PA-TFC membranes with
comparable flux and salt rejection but they will be completely tolerant to
free chlorine. This will make it an easy and affordable transition to
processing inexpensively chlorinated water to result in less
cleaning, longer membrane lifetime, and worry-free operations. Be free
